P25 - Cocoa budwood from Papua New Guinea

SPECIFIC IMPORT REQUIREMENTS FOR:

 

 

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) - budwood.

 

 

From Papua New Guinea

 

1         The consignment must be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate which must have the following Additional Declarations:

 

“Budwood has been selected from healthy insecticide treated mother plants free of symptoms of Vascular Streak Dieback (Oncobasidium theobroma), washed in soapy water and then dipped in a combination of ……………… fungicide and insecticide ……………….. according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”

AND

“Papua New Guinea is free of swollen-shoot virus.”

2         After phytosanitary treatment the ends of the budwood sticks should be dipped in paraffin wax to prevent desiccation. In addition each budwood stick should be labeled clearly so that no confusion may occur, and each accession should be packed separately.

 

INTERMEDIATE QUARANTINE PROCEDURES

 

1.       Unpack with care to contain any escaping insects.

2.       Buds should be removed and budded onto material from the importing country. The parent budwood sticks and the packing material should then be incinerated.

3.       Material originating in countries where virus diseases are known to occur should be indexed during intermediate quarantine (see specific guidelines for swollen shoot virus).

4.       Budded wood should be held under observation for at least 9 months and investigated further should disease symptoms be noted particularly of Vascular Streak dieback (Oncobasidium theobroma).

IN POST-ENTRY QUARANTINE FACILITIES IN THE IMPORTING COUNTRY

The budded material should be kept under close observation for at least three growth flushes and investigated further should disease symptoms be noted.
